Why choose Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

1. The Gentle Art:

BJJ is the only martial art that allows a practitioner to stop an aggressive attack without needing to hurt the assailant. Unlike other popular martial arts and self defense systems, such as Krav Maga, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung-Fu, etc. which rely heavily on striking your opponent, BJJ allows us to grapple an opponent into a position that they can not escape from without needing to strike or injure them.

2. Proven Effectiveness:

Jiu-Jitsu has been proven to be highly effective, particularly in a one on one confrontation. The techniques and principles of BJJ, as a self-defense and fighting art, allow us to survive a violent encounter. Even when our attacker is bigger and stronger than us we can manage the damage and have the best chance of escaping and surviving without serious injury.

3. Friendship & Community:

The bonds and friendships that are created overtime on the mat are very strong. It is a place where people of all walks of life come together with a common goal. It doesn’t matter what you do for a living, your political or religious beliefs, how big your bank account is, etc. we are all equals on the mat. We our proud to provide an environment where you will fill welcome on Day 1.

 4. Health & Fitness:

Jiu-Jitsu training is a very good aerobic exercise. It is not uncommon to see people get to a healthy weight by training regularly and consistently. You are likely to burn between 300 and 800 calories in a class depending on the intensity and duration. As well, many people develop better habits around diet and physical health to aid their training. This can lead to major improvements in one’s overall health.

5. Sport:

Jiu-Jitsu is currently one of the fastest growing sports. The sparring, also called, rolling, in jiu-jitsu is a practice of the sport. Using the techniques of jiu-jitsu, two training partners compete to control and submit one another.

Though it may seem intimidating at first, it is the most fun part of training. The ability to use the techniques safely in a sparring session, on a resisting and reacting opponent, is what makes makes a martial art effective. When both players know the techniques and strategies of BJJ, it becomes almost like a human chess match, with a submission being equivalent to a “check mate.”

6. Competition:

The IBJJF is the gold standard organization for competitive jiu-jitsu. Many tournaments employ their rule-set or some variation of it. Competing is a way to truly test your abilities against people your own age group, weight and relative skill level. There is never a requirement to compete, but it is encouraged as part of your learning process. It is no coincidence that the regular competitors are almost always the best practitioners in the academy.

7. Character Building:

Especially for kids, jiu jitsu can have profound positive impact on their character. It has a way of building confidence while naturally teaching lessons in humility, respect, manners, empathy, patience, and perseverance.

By practicing jiu-jitsu together we are allowing ourselves to be vulnerable and must trust our training partners to have our best interest at heart. To practice safely, we must care more about our safety than winning a sparring round.

Submissions are designed to injure joints and chokes are used to put someone unconscious, so we learn to respect each other and ourselves by giving up (tapping out) before an injury occurs. As well the person applying the submission needs to be controlled and careful in their application in order to give adequate time for their opponent to tap out before an injury can occur.
